Cyclamen - part two

The botanists say that cyclamen flowers are upside down in order to have the petals concealing the flower's stamen. this is definetly a possibillity recent research shows that some insects use the flower as shelter and protection from rain and low tempertures.

cyclamen's live for long periods. a single flower could live up to three weeks and the flowering season of cyclamens lasts from the end of november up until the begining of april. this property is usually the case for plants that are pollinated by insects but suffer from shortages of stamen.

the cyclame has a huge skein, it's diameter measures up to 15 cm. this is a storage room for food that many animals would be happy to feed on, to counter that , the cyclamen accumulates poison in the skein.

A cyclamen celebration

Even if you're not the field trip kind of person, this flower can reallybreak your heart. no need for haste though, the flowers will patientlywait for you until after april.
the cyclamen flower attracts the eye and heart not only because of itssize and colors but also because of the weird shape it has. the stemcarries the flowers bent on the upper edge, the opening between the petalsis always facing down.
whoever needs to enter through this entrance are its pollinators. to ease the recognition of the opening, the flower "signifies" the place of entry with a ring of deep purple, much darker a color then the rest of the petals. only a "fool of an insect" could not notice it.
